Gratitude Journals: A simple practice that will help you reduce stress and promote mindfulness

It is very easy to get distracted by your busy schedule and forget to appreciate the little things that make life meaningful. It is widely documented that constantly being busy is bad for your mental health and that it can result in stress and even depression. Not taking adequate breaks to reflect while learning can also hinder learning.

Because we know the importance of having a balanced life, we created a Gratitude Journal, which you can now find as part of our platform’s extensive list of educational exercises. Gratitude journals are an excellent way to help learners highlight important aspects or events that are influencing their lives, to make them more aware of what they feel grateful for, and, in this way, reduce stress and increase self-awareness.

Why is a gratitude journal an important tool for learning?

Whether at school or work, learning new things can sometimes be stressful because we are challenging ourselves and, at times, leaving our comfort zones. It does not always feel nice to be pushed outside your comfort zone. When one thing is difficult, or we are experiencing problems in one area of our lives, that negative feeling can become overpowering in all areas. This is where gratitude journals are particularly useful. By taking small mindful moments to list three or four things you are grateful for at that moment, your entire attitude can change and allow you to see things in a new light, which in turn will improve the learning experience and make it successful.

How can I use gratitude journals when creating courses?

Course creators can assign gratitude journals at any point in a course flow. We have created a template you can use as many times as you need to encourage course takers to reflect on things they are grateful for and, in this way, experience less stress and a more mindful learning process.

We hope this new exercise will enhance the learning experience of course creators and students alike. For our CEO Sahra-Josephine Hjorth, learning is a lifelong process, which, to be enjoyable and successful, must involve the entire human experience, including the social and emotional aspects, which are critical factors to successful learning.
