We taught our AI Course Authoring Tool AICATO to summarize the most important points and key takeaways in a course.

Back when I used to teach, we didn’t always agree on what the students should be reading and what the most suitable literature for given topics was. When we finally did agree, there was rarely consensus on the most important points or take away from a given video, academic journal, or news article.

meta-tagging all content across formats and combining it with a simple hashtag structure enabled us to automatically generate students’ knowledge-based CVs and gather a lot of analytics on what people are learning and talking about.

More than two years ago, we released our AI Course Authoring tool, AICATO, and the first ability AICATO mastered was meta-tagging content. While that may not sound super sexy or useful at first, meta-tagging all content across formats and combining it with a simple hashtag structure enabled us to automatically generate students’ knowledge-based CVs and gather a lot of analytics on what people are learning and talking about. Below you can see my auto-generated CV and also how it differs from my co-founder Christian’s CV. Christian is into Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Social Entrepreneurship. I’m into Human Rights and Global Development, and we share a passion for Sustainability.

We have taken our AI to the next level by introducing summaries of key takeaways from the curriculum that makes up a course. In each unit, the AI suggests a unit description that is tailor-made to the specific unit (if it’s first or last in the course) and includes summaries of the most important points from the learning materials in the unit. For now, the feature is available in English, but we will release Spanish shortly.

Why summaries matter

What we perceive as the most important takeaways are likely not the same. This feature is innovative because it:

  1. Reduces the time it takes course designers to build courses.
  2. It provides a second opinion for instructors.
  3. Every time you edit the auto-generated text, the algorithm improves and provides you with an even better summary next time.

Generally, the way we consume content has changed a lot in a short period of time. When i read the news, I prefer reading the summary first and then deciding if I want to make the investment in reading the entire text.

Generally, the way we consume content has changed a lot in a short period of time. When i read the news, I prefer reading the summary first and then deciding if I want to make the investment in reading the entire text. Providing summaries and key takeaways is already revolutionizing the news business, and it is a great alternative to people simply reading a headline. I believe thoughtfully crafted summaries can even help combat fake news. So with learning becoming micro-learning, and a greater reliance on video, having small summaries with key takeaways has never been easier than before we introduced this feature with AICATO.

we created an AI Course Authoring Tool, AICATO. We love how she is helping course creators reduce the time they spend coming up with questions, exercises, and unit descriptions.
